it’s a steamy, cloudy, end of october day here in jackson, which only serves to amplify a couple of day’s worth of brooding on how strange, lonely, beautiful and sad life can be…seasons changing always makes my head that much more aware of itself and its perceptions of the world around it and coming back from 50 degree days and 30 degree nights in up-state ny to ms’s sub-tropical version of fall seems to have thrown my emotional antennae a curveball…

so for the last few days i’ve been skulking through books, photos and rural lincoln county trying to re-affirm my conviction that life is complex because of it’s endless simplicities, which seems to ease these notions i sometimes have about the absurdity of being…

whew! that was heavy wasn’t it? sorry, but it’s typed, and it’s true, so i think i’ll leave it…good to cleanse the mind of such things every now and again…

the last week and a half has certainly been full of travel and visiting…the plone conference in new orleans was outstanding…i learned a lot, met some nice and knowledgeable people, and got to kick it with runyan, alma, steve, and dan, all great friends it was good to catch up with…

i will let the pictures (albums: 1 | 2 | 3) tell most of the up-state ny stories but there were some moments worthy of putting to words:

taking a late morning walk with graham to our aunt’s house through wellsville on a bluebird saturday morning…a tasty lunch at the ‘texas hot’, wellsville’s premiere local diner with graham and sara…traipsing through the hills, on fire with fall leaves, with graham and cousins jerry and andrew, who i never see often enough, and yet, like old friends and family should, pick up right where we left off in both conversation and fun…dinner at the ‘beef haus’ complete with $3 maker’s drinks…playing darts with andrew against some locals at ‘better days’ while watching game one of the world series…writing a blues song while camping out with all the cousins in the hotel room while consuming strong drink…

attending the festival following the ridge walk, a fine example of small town community fun up-state ny style…throwing the football on aunt ruth’s street dodging cars going to and from church…holing up with all the cousin’s upstairs to make grandma’s scrapbook for her birthday present…an incredible dinner of fall flavors (roasted pork, baked sweet potatoes, red cabbage salad and cheese biscuits finished off with a dessert of apple custard pie and concord grape pie) with all of the family in attendance…burning things in the fireplace for the hell of it with cousin claire after stuffing our faces…

a foggy morning’s drive from wellsville to rochester with graham and sara…a sunny day’s wandering through mount hope cemetery, filled with beautiful monuments and fall colors, with sara to visit the graves of susan b. anthony and frederick douglas…a country drive through unfamiliar territory with sara while listening to disc #2 of ‘mellon collie and the infinite sadness’, one of my favorite fall cd’s…a visit to cousin jenny’s house in honeyoye falls in the midst of a blackout which facilitated beer samples by flashlight at the local brew pub…standing outside jenny and ken’s with andrew, claire and the neighbor’s kids telling riddles and looking at stars…a night of trivia and cards with sara and liv at the old toad, a fine british styled pub in downtown rochester…the sun setting over the entire western sky during the flight from rochester to atlanta…

ok, that got long…if you made it this far, you are a trooper for sure…but having purged the dark side of the mind a bit and recounted a week’s worth of good memories, this nasty, humid, negative-day hasn’t got me down so bad…now i just have to figure out how to watch the ole miss/arkansas game, lsu/auburn game, and game six of the world series all at the same time…and i think that’s the most complex issue i will tackle today…selah
