weekend in the gauntlet #1

it’s been a nice relaxing day in brookhaven after a wild jackson weekend…i have to giggle at myself about how i occasionally take the parts that are the sum of me, throw them all up in the air, run out from under them for a couple of days and then try to jump back quickly enough to perform some freak ballet and catch them all simultaneously without many of them breaking…

i started the weekend with dinner at hal and mals then the holy ghost/living better electrically show at martin’s…i’m one of the 3 or 4 people in jackson who actually think ‘holy ghost’ is funny so i laughed my ass off for their whole set…it was good to see LBE playing again but little of what they played moved me incredibly, but then it’s pop music, so i guess it shouldn’t…

i did get to run into some old friends i hadn’t seen in a while, mainly amy clay and lindsey from up oxford-way, and got to help dematt celebrate his birthday with a snoot full of jaegermeister…after the show i went looking for a party but could not find it so i headed over to susan margaret and scott’s, where i was to spend the night…what i thought was going to be an hour or two of hanging out then crashing turned into scott and i staying up til 6:30 am drinking wine and talking about finding one’s path through life within the discipline of art…the sunrise was beautiful, the first i’d seen in a while with the added insight of a full night of music, no sleep, and plenty of wine…

needless to say work was a chore on 2 hours of sleep…twas a slow day, though, thankfully, so to stay awake i stayed off the computer and kicked it with matt and jason in the fiction room…matt and i had a good game of ‘throw the garbage wrapped in packing tape into the top corner of the far bookcase’ which is a great game that i’d highly recommend you stopping by the store sometime to learn and play on a slow day…

adam from the store called up and invited whoever was interested to come out to watch the lsu game…mary and i ended up going out there and had a nice visit with adam, his wife erica, and kyle (who was exceptionally well behaved)…the tigers performed admirably and without being so over-confident as to shift the karmic balance against us this coming week, i think that the win against alabama was a good way to head into oxford this next weekend, especially with ole miss having an off week…

after the game mary and i headed over to bronson’s and stayed up way too late having beers and kicking it with jason, erika, amy, and matt…somewhere along the way i found my second wind and we stayed til 3 am…needless to say it didn’t take me long to go to sleep on mary’s couch…sum total of the fri. and sat. night’s sleep: 5 hours…

so sunday morning i pull myself off the couch quick enough to stop by lemuria and set the fantasy football lineup, then head for brookhaven. it was 75 degrees and raining, another normal november in ms, but a perfect day for being lazy…so i laid around and watched football and ate some of mom’s wild rice and chicken soup, always a great meal, especially on a rainy day…i did get out of the house long enough to go see jeff and emily for a bit…we had a good visit and i was able to give jeff some audio software for his new computer…i’ll be very interested to see what he does with it, as talented as he is with music like things…

i finally get a good 10/11 hours of sleep on sunday night and, as mentioned above, once again set out on a day of getting stuff DONE, having neglected the responsible duties of social living for 3 days…apparently it takes 2 nights of all night partying to get me to the place where i will clean out my car, get the windshield wipers replaced, and tackle the 15+ item to do list i’ve been collecting for a month now…but it’s all done, so i guess you shouldn’t mess with the system as long as it works…i also had time to print and frame some pictures and work on a new song for a flash movie for the site…so on the whole we can put this weekend in the plus column all the way around…

a wild sleepless weekend will also keep me fairly low-key for the rest of this week in preparation for what will hopefully will be a truly decadent and fun-filled weekend in oxford…lsu plays ole miss in what will likely amount to the game that decides the SEC west champion…many of my fellow tiger fans are coming up from baton rouge and new orleans, and a fair number of friends from jackson will be there also so it should be quite the time…
