Just dropping a note to wish everyone a festive Mardi Gras weekend. It’s largely been a dark and cold January and February here in Baton Rouge and between that and coping with the end of the football season, with its ready made weekends of food, friends and fun, it’s good to have one of the biggest parties on the planet to look forward to and help usher in Spring’s arrival.
Things kick off tomorrow night with the Southdown’s neighborhood parade, a small, casual affair that is an excellent way to ease into the weekend. Saturday brings with it the early AM knockdown, dragout booze fest that is the Spanish Town parade, an event I’ve been fortunate to share with Gorjus, the Furies and the much loved, but equally feared, Screwmosa every year that I’ve lived here in the Stick. By Sunday things are in full swing and I’m off to NOLA for the Thoth parade/crawfish boil with the UG, which is always a fine time. Unfortunately I have to put in a day of work on Monday, but I hope to be back down in NOLA in time to get a decent Lundi Gras celebration in, which is a feather I do not yet have in my cap of Mardi Gras experiences. And then I’ll stay in NOLA to wrap it all up for Mardi Gras day, by which time I should be exhausted enough to enjoy another few weeks of the quiet life before the weather warms up and music festival season kicks off.
Here’s hoping I run into plenty of you out there in the middle of above-said shennanigans. Have fun and be safe.
Blast from ye olde past: Mardi Gras 2008.
